Music History Events: Band Breakups

September 29, 1994 Oasis temporarily split during their first US tour, with guitarist Noel Gallagher walking off stage mid-show in Los Angeles. During a lackluster performance, singer Liam hits his brother over the head with a tambourine. After being tracked down in Las Vegas, Noel is persuaded to return and rejoins the band in Minneapolis.

November 17, 1993 Ritchie Blackmore plays a concert in Helsinki with Deep Purple, then quits the band for the second and final time, in the middle of a tour.

May 26, 1993 At the Ivor Novello Awards, when the duo Shakespears Sister win an award for their album Hormonally Yours, Siobhan Fahey's publicist reads a statement letting her bandmate Marcella Detroit (and the rest of the audience) know they're breaking up. "I wish Marcy all the best for the future," it reads. "All's well that end's well."

June 30, 1991 During a show at Brixton Academy in London, The Alarm frontman Mike Peters tells the crowd he's leaving the group, shocking his bandmates with the announcement. The Alarm disbands and doesn't re-form with the original members until a one-off reunion in 2004 for the VH1 show Bands Reunited.

October 17, 1990 The Judds say goodbye. With daughter Wynonna by her side, Naomi Judd announces her retirement from music due to her illness with Hepatitis C. After the duo's farewell tour, Wynonna releases her first solo album in 1992.

September 25, 1989 New wave duo Tears for Fears release their third album, The Seeds Of Love. It's the last TFF release to feature Curt Smith, who relocates to New York to pursue a solo career after an acrimonious split with bandmate Roland Orzabal. They reunite in 2004 for Everybody Loves A Happy Ending.

September 21, 1989 Less than six months after hitting #1 with "Eternal Flame," the Bangles announce their split, with Susanna Hoffs launching a solo career. They re-form in 1998.
