Rolling Stone, 52, Marries Girl, 18

1989

Rolling Stones bass player Bill Wyman, 52, marries 18-year-old Mandy Smith in a 15-minute civil ceremony held at a registry office in Suffolk, England. The only witnesses are Smith's sister and Wyman's son. A proper celebration takes place three days later.

Wyman and Smith started dating in 1984, when she was just 13. Already part of the nightclub scene, Smith's parents were divorced and she lived with her mother, who approved the relationship. For most of their courtship, they were far from exclusive. "For the first time in years, I'm trying to cut down on the number of women I'm sleeping with," Wyman said in 1986 as he declared himself smitten with Smith. On Easter Sunday, 1989, Wyman proposed. Their wedding is scheduled for June 5 at St. John's Church in Hyde Park, London, but the couple make it official three days earlier, possibly in an effort to thwart the press, which has a keen interest in their nuptials. They go ahead with a "blessing" that day, with Wyman and Smith exchanging vows in front of roughly 500 guests, including all of Wyman's bandmates. At the reception, there are plenty of jokes about the age difference, with one guest presenting Wyman with a walker as a gift. Eric Clapton gives silk pajamas, because "at Bill's age, you shouldn't be hopping into bed unclothed." Stones drummer Charlie Watts is less sanguine. "I've never said this would be a good match," he says. The marriage lasts just nine months before the couple separate. In 1993, Wyman's 31-year-old son, Stephen, marries Smith's 46-year-old mother, Patsy. That same year, Bill gets married again, this time to Suzanne Accosta, who is in her 30s. Stephen isn't invited to the wedding. Had both Wyman/Smith marriages succeeded, Stephen would have become Mandy's stepson and stepfather, and Bill would be his son-in-law as well as his father.
