Shakira Trades Spanish For English On Laundry Service
2001With the help of Gloria Estefan, Colombian-born songstress Shakira releases her first English-language album, Laundry Service. It features the Top 10 hit "Whenever, Wherever."
Shakira, a native of Barranquilla, Colombia, became a Latin-pop sensation through her hit Spanish-language albums, Pies Descalzos and Donde Estan Los Ladrones, and was ready to make the leap to the English-language pop market with her next album. Emilio Estefan, her manager and producer, knew how to break a Latin star, having launched the career of his superstar wife, Gloria Estefan. The only problem was, Shakira didn't speak English. Despite working with a language coach, she was still hesitant about the project until Gloria helped her translate the Spanish lyrics into English. "I had to express all those experiences that I was going through in another language. It was quite a challenge and a little scary, but then it became an adventure, an interesting expedition to the unknown," Shakira recalls. Shakira's label wanted to tack a few English songs on a Latin album, but Gloria fought hard to get the full project greenlit, knowing it would be the singer's big shot for worldwide stardom. It works. Laundry Service - named for the soul-cleansing properties of Shakira's two passions, love and music – hits #3 on the US albums chart. It also spawns Shakira's first Hot 100 entry, the Latin-infused worldbeat love song "Whenever, Wherever," which peaks at #6.
