Alanis Pranks Black Eyed Peas
2007Proving she understands irony just fine, Alanis Morissette transforms the Black Eyed Peas' booty anthem "My Humps" into a mournful piano ballad for April Fools' Day. The accompanying music video debuts on YouTube and becomes a viral sensation, garnering millions of views.
In the video, a blinged-out Morissette mimics lead Pea Fergie's provocative dance moves while trying to fend off all the sleazy guys who are after her "lady lumps." The LA Times called the parody "a fascinating piece of video art, an inspired combination of satire, social criticism and career reinvention that is a signature artifact of today's viral Web culture," and gave Morissette props for skewering her own tendencies toward "self-absorbed angst." But for Morissette, the project was all in good fun and a much-needed moment of comic relief in the midst of her darker fare. As for Fergie, she loved the video and sent her appreciation to Morissette in the form of a derriere-shaped cake.
