Cheap Trick Play Budokan
1978Cheap Trick play the first of two shows at the Budokan arena in Toyko, Japan, where the band is huge. The shows are recorded and released as the album Cheap Trick At Budokan, breaking the band in their homeland of America, with the live version of "I Want You To Want Me" becoming a huge hit.
Cheap Trick has released three albums, all with middling sales figures in America, when they head to Japan, where they're immensely popular. They play the historic Budokan on April 28 and again two days later, and are blown away by the response. The crowd goes crazy, especially for the fan favorite "I Want You To Want Me," which appeared on their second album in 1977 and had been dropped from their setlist, restored for Japan because it's so popular there. Lead singer Robin Zander, told to annunciate very clearly when talking to the crowd, introduces the song by announcing the title with perfect diction. When he does, the cheering starts, and continues throughout the song, giving it an energy absent from the studio version. In February 1979, Cheap Trick At Budokan is released in America, with "I Want You To Want Me" issued as a single. Song garners lots of airplay and rises to #7 in July, giving the band their first big hit. The album goes on to sell over 3 million copies Stateside, breaking the band into the big time.
