Rob Thomas Of Matchbox Twenty Releases Debut Solo Album
2005Matchbox Twenty frontman Rob Thomas releases his debut solo album, …Something To Be, featuring the Top 10 hit "Lonely No More."
Thomas already tasted success apart from his famous band with "Smooth," his hit 1999 collaboration with Carlos Santana, but …Something To Be is his first proper solo effort. The lead single is the lovelorn pop tune "Lonely No More," which peaks at #6 on the Hot 100. In a 2020 Songfacts interview, Thomas explains why he chose the track as his first solo offering: "I feel like 'Lonely No More' stylistically represented a kind of music I liked, which was a hybrid uber-pop song with a rock tinge, but that the Matchbox guys would think, rightfully, was more pop than Matchbox probably wanted to be. It was a way to have my own unique sound and not just a Matchbox album without the band." The album debuts at #1, besting Mariah Carey's The Emancipation Of Mimi. The feat marks the first time an album by a male artist from a rock or pop group debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 since the chart's inception in 1967. It also sells more than 2 million copies, earning a double-platinum certification.
