Annie Lennox Issues First Solo Album

1992

Annie Lennox releases her first solo album, Diva, with the hits "Why" and "Walking On Broken Glass."

Lennox' professional career has been spent with Dave Stewart, her partner in the Eurythmics. After a decade of success, the cycle of recording, touring and promotion took a toll, and in 1990 she announced their split and her hiatus to focus on family and charity. When it comes time to record Diva, her manager, Simon Fuller, teams her with producer Stephen Lipson, whose previous clients include Grace Jones and Frankie Goes To Hollywood. It's a long process as Lennox adapts to working with other musicians besides Stewart, who handled most of the music and production in Eurythmics. Lennox has a lot going on in her personal life as well: her father died in 1987; a year later, she got married and had a child who was stillborn. In December 1990, her daughter Lola arrives. A few months later, Lennox gets to work using her studio. The songs have a synth-driven sound crafted by Marius De Vries, who fills Stewart's sizable shoes. The lyrics, for the most part, are very personal, but opaque. The first single, "Why," is an expression of all Lennox has been through, reflecting her feelings about becoming both a mom and a solo artist at age 37. Listeners connect with the song, and radio stations welcome it to their playlists. The more musically upbeat "Walking On Broken Glass" also makes an impact thanks to a video starring John Malkovich and Hugh Laurie. Lennox, whose striking look made her an MTV favorite with Eurythmics, is now a core artist on VH1. Diva hits #1 in Lennox' native UK, earns a Grammy nomination for Album Of The Year (losing to Eric Clapton's Unplugged), and sells over 2 million copies in America. Her next album, Medusa, does just as well.
