September 10, 2009 Nine Inch Nails completes its Wave Goodbye Tour at Los Angeles' Wiltern Theater, with Trent Reznor declaring that the band is done performing live for "the foreseeable future." The band maintains its hiatus for roughly four years, returning on July 26, 2013, with their Twenty Thirteen Tour.

August 15, 2004 At their Coventry Festival in the group's home state of Vermont, Phish play what they say is their last show, ending with the song "The Curtain With." The breakup proves temporary: in 2009, the band gets back together.

May 9, 2003 The Eagles, trimmed to a four-man lineup (Glenn Frey, Don Henley, Joe Walsh and Timothy B. Schmit) after parting ways with Don Felder, start their Farewell I tour in Richmond, Virginia, the title a mocking reference to the many "farewell" tours that aren't really. They play 168 dates on the tour over a span of three years.

June 14, 2002 Cher starts her Living Proof: The Farewell Tour. Planned for 59 dates, it ends up at 325, bringing in 260 million dollars. It's billed as her final tour, though she ends up returning to music years later.

April 9, 1997 Amidst personal tensions between its band members, Soundgarden announce their breakup, which lasts for 13 years.

February 9, 1997 Soundgarden play the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, their last show until 2010.

January 25, 1990 In Rio De Janeiro, Eurythmics play their last concert until their 1999 reunion. "Dave [Stewart] and I had got quite heartily sick of each other," Annie Lennox explains. "And I say that in an affectionate way."

November 3, 1977 At his Wembley Stadium concert in London, Elton John announces his retirement. Behind the scenes he's been struggling with addiction and trying to handle the stresses of stardom. He keeps a light schedule in 1978, but starts touring again in 1979.
