Simon & Garfunkel's "The Sound Of Silence" Hits #1

1966

Simon & Garfunkel reunite after a reworked version of their song "The Sound Of Silence" hits #1 in the US.

The folk duo went their separate ways after their debut album, Wednesday Morning, 3 A.M., flopped in 1964, with Paul Simon relocating to London and Art Garfunkel retreating to his studies at Columbia University. Little did they know, Columbia Records hadn't given up on them. Determined to capitalize on the growing folk-rock movement, the label tasked producer Tom Wilson to revamp the album's acoustic ballad "The Sound of Silence." Wilson brought in session players to overdub the tune with electric instruments, which sent the re-released single to #1 for two weeks. Astonished at their newfound success, Simon & Garfunkel reunite and work on their followup: The Sounds of Silence.
