Zayn Malik Leaves One Direction

2015

One Direction fans freak out when Zayn Malik announces he is leaving the group.

After five years as one of five heartthrobs with the Irish-English pop band One Direction, Zayn Malik quits the group, saying he just wants to be a "normal 22-year-old who is able to relax and have some private time out of the spotlight." Days earlier, the stressed-out singer pulled out of the band's On The Road Again Tour after a performance in Hong Kong. The rest of the guys are supportive in the press but admit to being a little mad at Malik for ditching them, especially with their success as a five-man outfit. Not only are they the first band to have four consecutive albums debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, but they also had the highest-grossing concert tour ever for a vocal group with the 2014 Where We Are tour, clocking in at $282 million. As for the fans… mad doesn't cover it. Distraught One Directioners react to Malik's departure by sharing emotional videos full of tears and screams on social media and tweeting messages of despair. Teenage drama aside, the reactions veer into disturbing territory with threats of suicide and blatant self harm. One fan even carves "I Love You Zayn" in her arm and shares the bloody image on Twitter with the hashtag #cut4zayn. Some go straight to a higher power, organizing candle-light vigils and prayer meetings to talk God into forcing Malik to stay with the band. It kinda works. The singer announces he'll pursue a solo career in his own direction.
