1981 "Private Eyes" by Hall & Oates hits #1, thanks to a detective-themed video that gets lots of airplay on MTV, which debuted three months earlier.

1981 The Kingston Trio play a reunion concert at the Magic Mountain theme park in Los Angeles that is recorded for a PBS special.

1979 The Rose, starring Bette Midler as a rock singer who hits the big time, opens in theaters. The film is based on the life of Janis Joplin, but filmmakers can't secure the rights to use her image or story. Midler gets an Oscar nomination for Best Actress for the role.

1974 Hard rocker Ted Nugent (of The Amboy Dukes) becomes national squirrel shooting champion.

1972 Bette Midler's debut album, The Divine Miss M, is released. It earns a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year and helps Midler win the trophy for Best New Artist.

1970 Chicago releases "Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?"

1969 Pink Floyd release their third album, Ummagumma, in the UK. Tracks include "Astronomy Domine" and "Careful With That Axe, Eugene."

1967 Pink Floyd appear on US TV for the first time, performing "Apples And Oranges" on American Bandstand.

1967 Elton John, still going by his given name of Reg Dwight, and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin sign their first major publishing deal. Their parents are there to witness the signing, as both are still minors.

1967 The radio station KSHE 94.7 FM in St. Louis flips format from easy listening to rock, starting with "White Rabbit." The move helps spread the sounds and ethos of the counterculture to the midwest, and KSHE becomes a major force in the movement.

1966 Elvis Presley finishes work on his 23rd film, Easy Come, Easy Go.

1964 Liam O'Maonlai (of Hothouse Flowers) is born in Monkstown, County Dublin, Ireland.

1963 The Beatles make their only visit to Ireland as a group, performing two shows in Dublin at the Adelphi Cinema.

1960 Elvis Presley records "Lonely Man," "In My Way," "Wild In The Country," "Forget Me Never," and "I Slipped, I Stumbled, I Fell."

1959 Smokey Robinson marries Claudette Rogers, a fellow member of The Miracles and the eventual inspiration for his song "My Girl," made famous by the Temptations. They divorce in 1985.
