Soundgarden Release Breakthrough Album Badmotorfinger
1991Soundgarden's second album for A&M Records, Badmotorfinger, is released. Its arrival neatly coincides with the uprising of grunge (Nirvana's Nevermind was released two weeks earlier, and Pearl Jam's Ten was issued on August 27) and serves as the group's commercial breakthrough.
The second Soundgarden album in a row produced by the band and Terry Date, Badmotorfinger also marks the first full-length recording to feature new bassist Ben Shepherd, who immediately makes his presence felt in the songwriting department - solely writing the track "Somewhere," and co-penning three other tunes: "Slaves And Bulldozers," "Jesus Christ Pose," and "Face Pollution"). The song "Outshined" is Soundgarden's first true MTV and rock radio hit, pushing the album to #39 in America, where it eventually sells over 2 million copies. An expanded version of Badmotorfinger is issued on June 28, 1992 with a five-song second disc with the palindrome title Satanoscillatemymetallicsonatas. A 25th anniversary boxed set reissue of the album appears on November 18, 2016. During the Badmotorfinger era, Soundgarden releases a number of non-album B-sides, most of which are cover songs. Among them: Devo's "Girl U Want," Budgie's "Homicidal Suicidal," Jimi Hendrix's "Can You See Me," Fear's "I Don't Care About You," Black Sabbath's "Into the Void," the Ramones' "I Can't Give You Anything" and the Rolling Stones' "Stray Cat Blues."
