Tony Hawk's Pro Skater Debuts With Punk Soundtrack

1999

Professional skateboarder Tony Hawk launches the video game Tony Hawk's Pro Skater with a punk and ska soundtrack that introduces gamers to acts like Goldfinger, Dead Kennedys, Primus, and The Vandals.

Growing up at skate parks, punk music was a big part of the culture for Hawk. He knew if he wanted to convince skateboarders to try out gaming, he had to create an authentic experience with the right kind of music. Some of the tracks are old favorites like the Dead Kennedys' "Police Truck" and Primus' "Jerry Was A Race Car Driver," along with newer fare like The Vandals' "Euro-Barge" and Goldfinger's "Superman." Hawk is so focused on Pro Skater being a skater's gateway to gaming, he doesn't consider the inverse effect: It also introduces gamers to the world of skateboarding and, in turn, the music that soundtracks the sport. As a result, it opens up a whole new fanbase for bands like Goldfinger, who are surprised when "Superman," a little-known cut from their sophomore album, is suddenly making crowds go wild. It becomes the unofficial anthem of the continuing series, which attracts the likes of Bad Religion, Green Day, and Anthrax. But video-game stardom does come with its challenges. Goldfinger frontman John Feldmann told Kerrang in 2022: "We still had to play 300 plus shows a year to prove that we weren't just this one hit Tony Hawk wonder, but I'm so grateful we were a part of it."
