INXS guitarist Kirk Pengilly is born in Kew, Victoria, Australia.

March 27, 1959

Keyboard player Andrew Farriss, who forms INXS along with his brothers, Tim and Jon, is born in Perth, Western Australia. He and lead singer Michael Hutchence team up to write most of the group's songs.

January 22, 1960

INXS lead singer Michael Hutchence is born in Lane Cove, a suburb of Sydney.

August 10, 1961

INXS drummer Jon Farriss is born in Perth, Western Australia. His brothers Tim and Andrew are also in the band.

March 25, 1983

INXS play America for the first time, performing at The Spirit Club in San Diego to a crowd of 24 people. In May, they play to a more substantial crowd when they're on the bill at the US Festival.

May 28, 1983

Apple's Steve Wozniak hosts the second US Festival, intending it to be the "Super Bowl of rock." The lineup is even more impressive than that of its 1982 predecessor, and the attendance is substantially larger. INXS play the first of two concerts in Guam, a small island in the Pacific that rarely draws major acts. The stop follows a three-month US tour and precedes their tour of Japan.

July 13, 1985

Piggybacking on Live Aid, top Australian acts play a benefit concert in Sydney called Oz For Africa. INXS, Little River Band and Men At Work are all on the bill.

INXS release their breakthrough album Kick, with the hits "Need You Tonight," "Devil Inside" and "New Sensation."More

September 7, 1988

INXS, the new sensation from Australia, are the big winners at the MTV Video Music Awards, taking five trophies, including Video Of The Year, for "Need You Tonight/Mediate." The songs are separate tracks on the album but combined for the video; the "Mediate" part is an homage to Bob Dylan's 1965 "Subterranean Homesick Blues" film.

September 25, 1990

INXS release X, the follow-up to their wildly successful 1987 album Kick. In the interim, lead singer Michael Hutchence released an album with his less glamorous band, Max Q.

July 13, 1991

INXS play to a crowd of 72,000 at Wembley Stadium in London, six years to the day Live Aid was held there. It is later released as the live album and video Live Baby Live.

March 28, 1992

INXS, Crowded House and other Australian acts play the "Concert For Life" benefit at Centennial Park in Sydney to help continue the work of Victor Chang, a leader in heart research who was murdered in 1991. The crowd is estimated at 100,000; no alcohol is allowed (a rarity at an Australian concert) because the park must be protected.

April 15, 1997

INXS release Elegantly Wasted, their last album with lead singer Michael Hutchence, who dies six months later.

September 27, 1997

At the Star Lake Amphitheater in Burgettstown, Pennsylvania, INXS play their last show with Michael Hutchence, who is found dead in his hotel room two months later. The last song is "Suicide Blonde."

November 22, 1997

Michael Hutchence of INXS dies in a Sydney hotel room in what the coroner rules a suicide. The famous frontman was just 37.More

September 20, 2005

JD Fortune wins the CBS reality competition Rock Star: INXS to become the group's new lead singer. INXS used various guest vocalists after the 1997 death of Michael Hutchence; Fortune stays with the group until 2011.

November 11, 2012

INXS, with Ciaran Gribbin on lead vocals, play their last concert, performing at Perth Arena in Australia as the support act for Matchbox Twenty. The band had re-formed with various lead singers since the death of frontman Michael Hutchence in 1997.

January 24, 2015

INXS guitarist Tim Farriss severs the ring finger on his left hand while operating a winch on his boat. Doctors reattach the digit after two surgeries.
