August 29, 1976

At a concert in Santa Monica, California, Neil Young joins Firefall on stage, who are opening for Spirit. When the headliners take the stage, Spirit's bass player asks Young to join them, but when he does, Spirit's frontman Randy California pushes him off the stage to the horror of his bandmates, who stop playing and leave.

August 11, 1976

With the help of some weed and tequila, Neil Young records an album's worth of songs in a single evening at Indigo Ranch Recording Studio in Malibu, California. Featuring "Pocahontas" and "Powderfinger," the album is buried by record executives until September 8, 2017, when it's released under the title of Hitchhiker.

Neil Young headlines the first Bridge School benefit concert in support of the non-profit institution that provides education for children with verbal and physical disabilities. Young and his wife Pegi co-founded the school when their son, Ben, was born with cerebral palsy. Mookie Blaylock (the band) go on the Seattle radio station KISW and announce they are changing their name to Pearl Jam, inspired by the jamming they saw at a Neil Young concert a few weeks earlier.

Pearl Jam play Neil Young's Bridge School benefit concert for the first time. The event takes place at the Shoreline Amphitheater outside of San Francisco.

November 6, 1993

Eddie Vedder, felled by a bad tuna fish sandwich, has to leave Pearl Jam's show at the Polo Fields in San Francisco after seven songs. Neil Young, on hand to play a song or two as a special guest, takes over, playing 14 songs to quell a potential riot. The No Code song "Red Mosquito" is about this incident.

At Neil Young's ninth annual Bridge School benefit concert, the Pretenders pay tribute to the late Shannon Hoon, whose band Blind Melon was supposed to play the event, with a cover of Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done." Beck, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Bruce Springsteen also perform.

Other acts on the roster include Jackson Browne, Elton John, Lucinda Williams, Kris Kristofferson (subbing for an ailing Merle Haggard), and Bridge veterans Pearl Jam.

November 9, 2010

A three-alarm fire in a warehouse where Neil Young stored everything from vintage cars to guitar cases causes damage estimated at about $800,000. The cause is promptly investigated, but fire officials say they don't find any evidence of arson.

March 30, 2011

Buffalo Springfield, which split in 1968, announce a reunion tour with original members Neil Young, Stephen Stills and Richie Furay. The tour lasts seven shows, ending with a performance at Bonnaroo. Another 30 dates are planned, but Young calls it off.
