SZA is born Solána Rowe in St. Louis, Missouri. She studies marine biology and holds down a series of odd jobs before making it big as a singer and songwriter.
SZA releases her debut studio album, Ctrl, a collection of alt-R&B songs that includes the singles "Drew Barrymore," "Broken Clocks," and "The Weekend." But the singer doesn't want to be billed solely as an R&B artist and expands her sound on her hit followup, SOS, with elements of hip-hop, pop, folk, indie rock, and electronica.
SZA appears in the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time when "What Lovers Do" by Maroon 5, featuring her guest vocals, peaks at #9.
With five nominations, SZA is the most-nominated woman at the Grammy Awards but fails to win in any category, including Best New Artist, which goes to Alessia Cara. Twitter reacts to the snubs against the singer - who released her acclaimed debut album, Ctrl, the previous year - with outcries of "Justice for SZA!"
SZA performs two cuts from her album SOS on Saturday Night Live, but it's a song called "Cuffing Season" in the skit "Big Boys" - a celebration of hefty boyfriends - that takes off of TikTok.
SZA's sophomore album, SOS, is named Best Progressive R&B Album at the Grammy Awards. The album track "Ghost In The Machine" (with Phoebe Bridgers) also wins Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and "Snooze" takes Best R&B Song.
SZA appears on The Drew Barrymore Show, where she breaks down her 2017 song "Drew Barrymore." She tells the host that she inspired the song and was a big influence on her because Drew embraced her imperfections and was "unapologetically yourself."
