Pepsi posts a commercial featuring the Skip Marley protest song "Lions" that is pulled the next day amid controversy that it makes light of actual protests.
The ad follows a group of rather jovial protesters as they march down a street holding signs with anodyne messages like "join the conversation." Social media star Kendall Jenner leaves her fashion shoot to join the fray, then hands a police officer a can of Pepsi, which he opens to roars of approval. The company says it "captures the spirit and actions of those people that jump in to every moment." Marley's song, written about the protests in the days after Donald Trump was elected president, plays throughout the spot. Actual protesters, especially those associated with the Black Lives Matter movement, find the whole thing rather demeaning and take Pepsi to task. Martin Luther King's daughter mockingly tweets: "If only Daddy would have known about the power of #Pepsi." Pepsi pulls the ad the next day, issuing a statement that reads: "Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly, we missed the mark and apologize. We did not intend to make light of any serious issue. We are pulling the content and halting any further rollout." With Jenner, Pepsi is trying to replicate the success they had in a 1992 ad starring Cindy Crawford, but they end up with results closer to their disastrous association with Madonna.
