Alice In Chains Release Facelift
1990Alice in Chains release their debut album, Facelift, one of the first grunge albums to gain widespread popularity.
While acts like Mudhoney an Nirvana are building some thing big on the local Seattle label Sub Pop, Alice in Chains and Soundgarden are the grunge bands with major label support. The Soundgarden album Louder Than Love, released on A&M, is the first to crack the Billboard 200, showing up at #108 on March 10, 1990. Facelift, released on Columbia, gets little attention outside of the Pacific Northwest at first, but the single "Man In The Box" shows enough potential to earn a video, which is made early in 1991. When MTV picks it up, some of the more daring rock radio stations begin playing the song, giving the band national attention. On July 6, 1991, Facelift sets a new milestone when it peaks at #42 on the Billboard 200. With no other national touring acts like them, Alice In Chains have to promote the album by opening for Poison, Van Halen and Extreme. They also log time on the 1991 Clash of the Titans tour, opening for metal bands Slayer, Anthrax and Megadeth. In August 1991, Pearl Jam release Ten, which is followed in September by Nirvana's Nevermind. These albums also take a while to catch on, but when they do, they create a wave that brings Alice In Chains along for the ride. Facelift goes on to sell over 2 million copies in America. Their next album, Dirt, released in September 1992, sells over 4 million.
