July 5, 1969 The Rolling Stones put on a free concert in London's Hyde Park, which becomes a tribute to their founding member Brian Jones, who died two days earlier.

April 7, 1968 At the Generation Club in New York, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, B.B. King, Richie Havens and Buddy Guy take the stage for a jam session in tribute to Martin Luther King, Jr., who was killed three days earlier.

September 3, 2022 At Wembley Stadium, a brigade of stars including Paul McCartney, Kesha, and Nile Rodgers join Foo Fighters in a tribute concert for their drummer, Taylor Hawkins, who died six months earlier.

February 26, 2022 The Avicii Experience museum opens in Stockholm with interactive and real-life exhibits dedicated to the DJ/producer, who died in 2018 at 28.

April 22, 2020 At the Jersey 4 Jersey virtual benefit concert, surviving members of Fountains of Wayne reunite (from their homes) with Sharon Van Etten to pay tribute to Adam Schlesinger, who died of coronavirus three weeks earlier. Bruce Springsteen also performs, and Bon Jovi debut a new song called "Do What You Can." The event raises nearly $6 million for coronavirus relief.

January 16, 2019 At the Forum in Los Angeles, the surviving members of Soundgarden play their first show together since Chris Cornell's passing as part of the star-studded I Am the Highway: A Tribute to Chris Cornell concert.More

August 25, 2018 During her Reputation tour, Taylor Swift headlines a concert at the Nissan Stadium in Nashville, Tennessee, where Tim McGraw and Faith Hill join her onstage for a performance of her seminal country hit "Tim McGraw."

July 26, 2018 The Broadway musical Head Over Heels, an Elizabethan farce inspired by the music of The Go-Go's, premieres at the Hudson Theatre in New York City.More

October 17, 2017 To commemorate the 28-year anniversary of Selena's self-titled debut album, Google Doodle pays tribute to the late singer, who was murdered by her ex-fan club president in 1995, with an animated video about her rise to fame. The clip features her hit single "Bidi Bidi Bom Bom."More

October 7, 2017 Jason Aldean pays tribute to Tom Petty and the victims of the Las Vegas shooting a week earlier with a performance of "I Won't Back Down" on Saturday Night Live.More

August 13, 2017 David Bowie makes a posthumous appearance in the TV series Twin Peaks: The Return. The late singer, who made a cameo appearance as a deranged FBI agent in the cult classic's 1991 prequel, Fire Walk With Me, was supposed to return for the show's revival but died before filming. Director David Lynch used archive footage from the movie to bring Bowie to life in the episode.

May 1, 2017 At the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, John Popper, Susan Tedeschi, Widespread Panic and many other artists perform at a tribute to Col. Bruce Hampton in celebration of his 70s birthday. Hampton, a mentor to many of these musicians, collapses on stage and dies during the encore. "Bruce was the only person I could think of who has ever played at his own funeral," his friend Scott McKinney says.

December 7, 2015 Less than a month after their concert was invaded by terrorists and many of their fans murdered, Eagles of Death Metal make an emotional return to the Bataclan Theatre in Paris, where they lay flowers in memory of the 90 dead. They also join U2 on stage at the AccorsHotel Arena to perform Patti Smith's "People Have the Power." "Don't Let It Go Away" is performed by the Missing People Choir in a carol service at St Martin-in-the-Fields, Trafalgar Square in the evening.

May 9, 2013 Rocker Sixto "Sugar Man" Rodriguez receives an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from his alma mater, Wayne State University, Detroit.

November 13, 2012 RCA Records releases a greatest hits album to commemorate the late Whitney Houston, who died in February 2012. The album, titled I Will Always Love You - The Best of Whitney Houston, includes all 11 of her #1 Billboard charting hits.

May 10, 2010 In tribute to the recently deceased Detroit Tigers broadcaster Ernie Harwell, Jose Feliciano performs the US national anthem before the Tigers/Yankees game at Tiger Stadium. In 1968, Harwell had Feliciano sing the anthem before a Tigers World Series game, and the 23-year-old blind Puerto Rican singer responded by playing the first non-traditional rendition of the song at a major sporting event. He and Harwell took a lot of heat, but in later years, it became common for singers to put their own spin on the song.

February 21, 2010 On what would have been her 77th birthday, a sculpture of Nina Simone is dedicated in her hometown of Tyron, North Carolina in what is renamed "Nina Simone Plaza."

August 29, 2009 Two months after Michael Jackson's death on what would have been his 51st birthday, 13,597 people in Mexico City perform the Thriller dance, establishing a new Guinness World Record.

May 25, 2008 Jet releases a YouTube video featuring their song "Shine On" that honors the life and work of Australian ophthalmologist Fred Hallows. It is estimated that Hallows' work in Australia and other developing nations has helped bring eyesight to over one million people. In an interview with the Sydney Morning Herald, lead singer Nic Chester said, "hopefully [the video] encourages people to make a donation to keep Fred's work going."

February 24, 2008 A statue of departed AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott is unveiled in his hometown of Fremantle, Australia.

May 19, 2007 At Porter Wagoner's 50th anniversary celebration at the Grand Ole Opry, Dolly Parton sings "I Will Always Love You" to Wagoner, whom she wrote the song about in 1974.

November 13, 2004 After several years of feuding, the rap group A Tribe Called Quest get back together for a reunion show at the Rock the Bells festival. It's also the night when their friend and fellow rapper Ol' Dirty Bastard from the Wu-Tang Clan dies. A Tribe Called Quest open their show with a tribute to ODB and perform some of Wu Tang's songs to start the set.

September 11, 2001 On the afternoon of the terrorist attacks against the country, a group of US senators and congressmen gather on the Capitol steps to sing Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." The song is invoked many times in the following days.

September 7, 2001 Ryan Adams shoots the video for his song "New York, New York" with the World Trade Center in the background. Four days later, the buildings are destroyed in terrorist attacks; when the video is released, it is dedicated to the victims.

August 16, 1997 A tribute concert is held in Memphis, Tennessee, remembering Elvis Presley on the 20th anniversary of his death. Daughter Lisa Marie unveils the music video "Don't Cry Daddy," a virtual duet with her father that features his original vocals from the 1969 tune along with her own.

January 7, 1997 David Bowie's 50th birthday bash takes place at New York City's Madison Square Garden in the form of a charity concert benefiting Save the Children. Bowie's famous pals - including Sonic Youth, Lou Reed, Robert Smith, Billy Corgan, and Foo Fighters, among others - pay tribute with renditions of the singer's tunes. Bowie closes out the event with his 1969 hit "Space Oddity."

October 28, 1995 At Neil Young's ninth annual Bridge School benefit concert, the Pretenders pay tribute to the late Shannon Hoon, whose band Blind Melon was supposed to play the event, with a cover of Young's "The Needle And The Damage Done." Beck, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Bruce Springsteen also perform.

April 26, 1991 A tribute concert for Tim Buckley, who died in 1975 at 28, is held at St. Ann's Church in Brooklyn. It's the first time his son, Jeff Buckley, performs his father's music.
