Vanity Dies Two Months Before Prince
2016Prince protégé Vanity dies at age 57 after years of health problems.
Born Denise Matthews in Ontario, she met Prince when she came to Los Angeles and started working as a model and actress. He assigned her the name Vanity when he made her the namesake of a trio called the Vanity 6. The group opened for him on his 1999 tour and had a minor hit with "Nasty Girl." Prince and Vanity were a couple, and she was slated for the female lead in the movie Purple Rain, but when they split, he replaced her in both the film and the group with Apollonia Kotero (the group was re-named Apollonia 6). After her death, Prince dedicated "Little Red Corvette" to her at a concert in Melbourne, where he said, "She loved me for the artist I was, I loved her for the artist she was trying to be." Two months after Vanity's passing, Prince dies, also at age 57.
