Michael Bolton Born

1953

Michael Bolton is born Michael Bolotin in New Haven, Connecticut. Before reaching soft-rock stardom, he fronts a hard-rock band called Blackjack.

After breaking into the business as a session singer, he signs with RCA and in the mid-'70s releases two soulful albums under his real name that go nowhere. Turning to hard rock, he fronts the band Blackjack from 1979-1980 before signing with Columbia Records. His first two Columbia albums are in the rock vein, but in 1987 he returns to blue-eyed soul with his album The Hunger, featuring his cover of Otis Redding's "(Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay," one of many soul classics he would record to augment the songs he writes. His 1989 album Soul Provider is his breakthrough, with the #1 Hot 100 hit "How Am I Supposed to Live Without You." Time, Love & Tenderness fares even better, going to #1 in the US on the strength of another cover, "When a Man Loves a Woman." His fans are legion, but his detractors are many, taking him to task for watering down famous songs by black artists. The sketch comedy show In Living Color does a parody called "When a Man Needs a Big Hit," where Jim Carrey mocks him with lyrics like: When a man needs a big hit Only one thing he's got to do Swipe another song From a long-dead brother He certainly swipes some songs, but he also writes them; his co-writes include Cher's hit "I Found Someone" and the Kiss song "Forever." His last big hit is the Mutt Lange collaboration "Said I Loved You... But I Lied," which hits #6 in 1994. The rest of the decade includes a Christmas album and foray into opera with the 1998 album My Secret Passion: The Arias. In 2011 he provides comedy gold in the Lonely Island song "Jack Sparrow," where he writes a "big, sexy hook" all about the movie Pirates of the Caribbean.
