Mills Wins Millions In Divorce From McCartney

2008

Heather Mills is awarded 23.7 million pounds (about $47 million) in her divorce from Paul McCartney, substantially more than the $32 million Paul offered. Throughout the ordeal, Mills is vilified in the British press as being opportunistic.

Mills married McCartney in 2002 despite a tumultuous courtship that included one of them throwing a $25,000 diamond and sapphire ring out of a Miami hotel window (luckily, it was retrieved by the diligent hotel staff and a metal detector). The marriage produced a daughter, Beatrice Milly McCartney, and inspired a few songs from the ex-Beatle, including "Heather" - which was played at their lavish wedding ceremony - and "Too Much Rain." But the union soon soured, with Mills casting McCartney's daughter Stella (born to late wife Linda) as a meddling shrew and McCartney himself as a violent drunk who once stabbed Mills with a broken wine glass. During the six-day divorce hearing, Mills seeks 125 million pounds from her husband, but presiding judge Justice Bennett calls her a "less than impressive witness" as oppose to McCartney, who is "consistent, accurate, and honest." He awards her nearly 24 million pounds, adding 35,000 more per annum for Beatrice's care. Mills says the constant scrutiny of the British press during her marriage is the most painful thing she's ever endured, including the 1993 motorcycle accident where she lost a leg. "When you're vilified for doing nothing but falling in love with an icon ... I'd rather have all of my limbs cut off that's the God's honest truth."
