John Lennon Tribute Concert In Liverpool
1990Lou Reed, Al Green, Terence Trent D'Arby, Kylie Minogue and Randy Travis are among the performers at a John Lennon tribute concert in his hometown of Liverpool, England.
The event is held at Pier Head, along the River Mersey, and hosted by Superman actor Christopher Reeve. The venue seats 45,000, but only about 15,000 attend, many turned off by the $41 ticket price. The occasion is Lennon's 50th birthday, which isn't until October 9, when producers are hoping to air it as a TV special. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono, sanctions the event and marks profits for Lennon's Spirit Foundation. Memorable performances include Green's "Power to the People," D'Arby's "You've Got To Hide Your Love Away," and Minogue's disco version of "Help!." Ray Charles does "Let It Be," even though it's really a Paul McCartney song. McCartney and Ringo Starr both appear on video performing tributes to Lennon - McCartney with his band and Ringo backed by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne. The show ends with all of the performers, along with Yoko and Sean Lennon, taking the stage for "Give Peace A Chance." The concert is shown live on British TV, but the grand plans to air it globally on Lennon's actual birthday never materialize. Lenny Kravitz, who does "Cold Turkey," meets Sean for the first time. Months later, they collaborate on a new version of "Give Peace A Chance" in protest of the impending Gulf War.
