John Frusciante Quits Chili Peppers Mid-Tour

1992

John Frusciante quits the Red Hot Chili Peppers in the middle of their Japanese tour.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers are indeed red hot, with their single "Under the Bridge" taking off. Their 22-year-old guitarist John Frusciante, however, is disillusioned with their newfound popularity and is falling apart. When the band goes to Japan for their Blood Sugar Sex Magik tour, he melts down completely. Early on the morning of May 7, he calls their tour manager Tony Selinger and demands passage back to Los Angeles immediately. Selinger calls his bandmates, and they convince Frusciante to play their show in Tokyo that night, but the next day, he heads back home. The band cancels the two remaining shows scheduled in Japan and postpones the Australian leg of the tour when they can't find a suitable replacement. They regroup at Lollapalooza in July with Dave Navarro, who becomes the Red Hot Chili Peppers' seventh guitarist. Frusciante makes a conscious decision to become a drug addict and spends the next several years dealing with his issues. "I quit playing because I wanted to stop playing music, and the drugs were something I took to self medicate myself," he says. "And it worked." In 1998, Frusciante goes to rehab, gets clean and rejoins the band, where he remains until 2009.
