At the Sacramento stop on his Saint Pablo Tour, Kanye West does three songs, delivers a 17-minute monologue, and leaves the stage.
During his rant, West claims that awards shows are rigged, and that Beyoncé insisted on winning Video of the Year at the MTV Video Music Awards as a condition of her performance. Jay-Z, Drake and several other artist get mentions, as do Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, and Donald Trump, who was elected president two weeks earlier. "Obama couldn't make America great because he couldn't be him to be who he was," West says. "Black men have been slaves. Obama wasn't allowed to do this and still win. He had to be perfect." At a San Jose performance two days earlier, West stopped the show for about 25 minutes, telling the audience from his floating stage that he didn't vote, but would have voted for Trump. In Sacramento he goes into more detail. "It's a new world, Hillary Clinton, it's a new world. Feelings matter. Because guess what? Everybody in middle America felt a way and they showed you how they felt." After calling out the radio industry, he takes aim at the media gatekeepers that influenced the election. "I ain't here to massage you with a fake truth, telling you that Hillary's gonna win over and over and over and then you wake up and you still can't believe it," he says. "You know why? Because you was lied to by Google. You was lied to by Mark Zuckerberg." After speaking his peace, West says, "The show's over" and drops the mic. He doesn't return. Concertgoers are given refunds; two days later West is hospitalized with exhaustion and the rest of the Saint Pablo Tour is cancelled.
