Sting Is Born
1951Sting is born Gordon Matthew Thomas Sumner in Wallsend, Northumberland, England. He earns his nickname when a fellow musician says he looks like a bee in his yellow-and-black striped sweater. He is working as a schoolteacher when his band The Police hit the big time.
The Police hit #6 in the UK with the release of their debut album, Outlandos d'Amour, in 1978 and follow up with four consecutive #1 albums, stacked with hits like "Roxanne," "Message in a Bottle," "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic," and "Every Breath You Take," until Sting decides to go solo after their first US chart-topping album, Synchronicity, in 1983. Two years later, he releases his first solo album, The Dream of the Blue Turtles, a jazz-inflected collection that sets the charts abuzz with the singles "If You Love Somebody Set Them Free," "Fortress Around Your Heart," and the paranoia-tinged "Russians." The album peaks at #3 in the UK and #2 in the US, setting the bar high for a successful body of work apart from his former bandmates, encompassing 12 studio albums - most landing in the Top 10 - across three decades. He also contributes to several soundtracks, including The Emperor's New Groove, with the tune "My Funny Friend and Me" earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song. In 2003, he's inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame… as a member of The Police.
