Gilmore Girls Debuts With Theme From Carole King
2000Gilmore Girls debuts on The WB with an updated version of Carole King's "Where You Lead" as its theme song. Reflecting the show's mother-daughter theme, King sings the song with her daughter Louise Goffin.
Gilmore Girls follows the lives of free-spirited single mother Lorelai Gilmore and her bright teenage daughter, Rory, in a quaint town in Connecticut called Stars Hollow. Series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino approached King about using the song from her landmark 1971 album Tapestry, but revamping it as a duet between King and her own daughter Louise Goffin to reflect the show's mother-daughter theme. For King, it was also a chance to alter the song's message about taking cues from men. "After I recorded it for the Tapestry album, we women decided that we didn't actually need to follow our men anymore," she explained. "But then it got a new lease on life." Goffin added in a Talkhouse interview: "With the song in the context of Gilmore Girls, it took a positive turn, and now with my mother and I singing to one another, it had a deeper meaning of love between a mother and her child." King and Goffin continue their association with the hit show by making cameo appearances, with King playing the local record store owner and Goffin playing the town troubadour's sister.
