Chris Cornell and Kim Thayil accept the Best Metal/Hard Rock Video Award at the MTV Video Music Awards for Soundgarden's "Black Hole Sun" clip, beating out Aerosmith ("Cryin'"), Anthrax ("Black Lodge"), and Rollins Band ("Liar").

March 1, 1995

Soundgarden win two Grammy Awards: Best Hard Rock Performance for "Black Hole Sun" and Best Metal Performance for "Spoonman."

May 21, 1996

Soundgarden's fifth album, Down On The Upside, is released. It debuts at #2 in America, behind Fugees' The Score.

May 18, 1996

Soundgarden perform for the first (and only) time on Saturday Night Live, playing "Pretty Noose" and "Burden In My Hand." Jim Carrey hosts.

June 27, 1996

The sixth edition of Lollapalooza launches at Longview Lake in Kansas City, Missouri. Defying tradition as a showcase for underground acts, the headliner is Metallica, with Soundgarden also on the bill. Lollapalooza founder Perry Farrell bows out, and the tour lasts one more year before going on a 6-year hiatus.

Soundgarden play the Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii, their last show until 2010.

April 9, 1997

Amidst personal tensions between its band members, Soundgarden announce their breakup, which lasts for 13 years.

November 4, 1997

The first-ever Soundgarden "best of" compilation is released, A-Sides.

Chris Cornell tweets that Soundgarden, split since 1997, are getting back together.

At the Showbox in Seattle, Washington, Soundgarden play their first show in 13 years.

November 13, 2012

Soundgarden release their sixth album, King Animal, their last with Chris Cornell.

The second single from Soundgarden's album King Animal, "By Crooked Steps," is released. Its video is directed by Dave Grohl.

July 19, 2014

Nine Inch Nails and Soundgarden launch a co-headlining tour at Planet Hollywood in Las Vegas, Nevada.

At the WXTB Rockfest, in Tampa, Florida, Soundgarden launch what will be their final tour with Chris Cornell, who dies on May 17 at a stop in Detroit.

Chris Cornell is laid to rest at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles next to Johnny Ramone. Mourners at the funeral service include Dave Navarro, Tom Morello, Lars Ulrich, James Hetfield, Courtney Love and his Soundgarden bandmates Matt Cameron and Kim Thayil. Cornell hanged himself on May 18.More
