Oasis Starts Britpop Invasion With Definitely Maybe

1994

Oasis release their debut album, Definitely Maybe. The record goes on to sell over a million copies in the US, spearheading a second British Invasion, but for now the band remain unknown outside of the UK.

Back in July Oasis played their debut American show at the New Music Seminar at Wetlands, New York City, but their Stateside support is limited and the album is launched in the USA without fanfare, as the band play a show in London's Virgin Megastore. Their special guest at that performance is the Lemonheads' Evan Dando - a symbolic passing of the torch as the center of gravity of alternative rock will shortly cross the Atlantic as Britpop explodes onto the scene. Oasis offer a refreshing alternative to the current rock zeitgeist. Unlike many in the grunge movement, they want to be stars – and unlike most other British bands at the time, they are proud of their heritage and shamelessly borrow ideas (and sometimes whole melodies) from bands like The Beatles, The Kinks and T-Rex. Definitely Maybe is low on production value and high on passion. With tracks like "Live Forever" and "Slide Away," songwriter Noel Gallagher has created positive anthems that surf the crest of a new wave of political optimism in the UK. His cocksure brother Liam spits out his lines like a cross between Johnny Rotten and John Lennon. The following year, Oasis release (What's the Story) Morning Glory? and become the biggest British band in the world. Definitely Maybe is merely the launch of their manifesto.
