Barcelona Opera Plays To Audience Of Plants

2020

The day after Spain lifted a 3-month coronavirus lockdown, the Liceu opera in Barcelona opens its season with an unusual performance: Each of the 2,292 seats is occupied by a houseplant.

This bit of performance art, which is livestreamed for humans, reflects the weary absurdity of life under lockdown. The plants represent nature reclaiming their turf. The show is a 6-minute performance by a string quartet, which plays Puccini's "Chrysanthemum." The plants, which came from local nurseries, are donated to frontline workers after the show. Spain was hard-hit by the pandemic; the performance is a way to bring some levity and introspection to the country as it gradually reopens.
