Cher Calls Letterman an A-Hole

1986

Cher, making her first appearance on David Letterman's show, tells him why she declined the many invitations to come on before: Because she thought he was an "a--hole."

When Letterman's show went on the air in 1982, Cher was at the top of their list for potential guests, but she always declined. She liked the show, but noticed that Dave could be rude to guests and would sometimes make fun of them. When she finally agrees, it's a big deal - Cher is a huge star in the world of both music and movies, very colorful with legions of fans. Letterman gives her a warm introduction, but then presses her on why she hasn't done the show before. "I thought I would never want to do this show with you," she tells him. "Why? Because you thought I was..." Letterman replies. "An A--hole," Cher says, filling in the blank. This being network TV, it's bleeped out, but it's clear from the audience reaction what Cher said. "For you folks at home that missed it, she said I was an 'awfully nice guy,'" Letterman says. In her memoir The First Time, Cher explains that Letterman's producer asked her before the show why she hadn't come on in the past, and she told him it was because she thought the host was "kind of an a--hole." He clearly relayed this information to Letterman, who used it to create some tension. "I really didn't mean to say it," Cher wrote. "But then I looked at him smirking at me, and suddenly the words just jumped out of my mouth." The episode becomes a part of Letterman lore, and he and Cher become frenemies. She returns to his show several times, most famously the following year with her ex, Sonny Bono, when Letterman cajoles them into singing "I Got You Babe" together.
