Stevie Wonder Tops The Hot 100, R&B, AC And UK Charts
1984Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called To Say I Love You" tops the Hot 100, Adult Contemporary, R&B and UK Singles charts.
Wonder had been working on his album In Square Circle for about four years when he wrote the song, but it wasn't for that album - it was for a Gene Wilder movie called The Woman In Red. Wonder's label, Motown, wasn't impressed with the first songs he wrote for the film, but when he produced "I Just Called To Say I Love You," they knew they had a hit on their hands. The film gets a tepid response, but the song finds a huge audience that appreciates the simple sentiment of a phone call just to say "I love you." For some of Wonder's longtime fans, it triggers a gag reflex, but the numbers don't lie: six weeks at #1 in the UK and three weeks on top of the Hot 100, R&B and Adult Contemporary charts. It also earns Wonder an Oscar for Best Song. At the ceremony, he accepts it in the name of Nelson Mandela.
