September 3, 1968 Ringo returns to The Beatles after quitting in frustration during the White Album sessions. He finds his drum kit covered in flowers.

July 9, 1968 David Ruffin is fired from The Temptations after missing a show. The lead singer on their hits "My Girl" and "Ain't Too Proud To Beg," Ruffin clashes with his bandmates and with Motown head Berry Gordy before he is fired.

January 26, 1968 At the University of Southampton, Pink Floyd play their first gig without founding member Syd Barrett, who never returns to the band. The 22-year-old Barrett is an early acid casualty, no longer able to contribute to the group.

June 15, 1967 Peter Green leaves John Mayall's Bluesbreakers to form Fleetwood Mac. He hires Mick Fleetwood, but it takes John McVie four months to leave The Bluesbreakers and join the band named after him.

July 16, 1966 A supergroup is born as former Yardbirds guitarist Eric Clapton teams up with bassist Jack Bruce and drummer Ginger Baker of the Graham Bond Organization to form Cream. They break up just three years later, but leave a lasting impact that earns them induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1993.

January 14, 1966 David Jones issues his first recording under the name "David Bowie." Jones changed his last name to Bowie in order to avoid confusion with the Monkees' Davy Jones. The single is called "Can't Help Thinking About Me" and is credited to David Bowie and the Lower Third.

January 1, 1966 Simon & Garfunkel reunite after a reworked version of their song "The Sound Of Silence" hits #1 in the US.More

April 9, 1965 Bruce Johnston joins The Beach Boys as the permanent replacement for Brian Wilson.

March 13, 1965 Eric Clapton, concerned that the band is becoming too commercial, leaves The Yardbirds. His replacement is Jeff Beck.

March 3, 1965 Eric Clapton plays his last show with The Yardbirds, leaving to join John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. He is replaced by Jeff Beck.

December 23, 1964 After appearing on the TV show Shindig! where they perform their Christmas hit "Little Saint Nick," The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson has a nervous breakdown on a flight to Houston, where they begin a two-week tour. Wilson decides to stop performing, and Glen Campbell replaces him on the tour.

August 16, 1962 Pete Best is fired as drummer for The Beatles, replaced by Ringo Starr. The group's manager Brian Epstein does the firing by calling Best into his record shop and giving him the bad news.

October 25, 1961 Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, who haven't seen each other since primary school, run into each other at the Dartford train station in England - Keith is on his way to Sidcup Art College; Mick is headed to the London School of Economics. Noticing the Muddy Waters and Chuck Berry albums Mick is carrying, Keith strikes up a conversation. They later form The Rolling Stones.

July 19, 1958 The Drifters manager George Treadwell, who owns the name, fires the group and replaces them with members of The Five Crowns. When Ben E. King joins the group a short time later, The Drifters become consistent hitmakers, scoring with "There Goes My Baby," "This Magic Moment" and "Save The Last Dance For Me."

July 30, 1942 Frank Sinatra ends his association with the Tommy Dorsey orchestra, recording the last two of over 90 songs before moving on to great acclaim as a solo star at Columbia.

July 8, 2016 Geri Horner, Emma Bunton and Mel B of the Spice Girls announce that they are forming a new group called GEM, which is what you want. What you really, really want.More

March 25, 2015 One Direction fans freak out when Zayn Malik announces he is leaving the group.More

January 26, 2015 Blink-182 announce Tom DeLonge's resignation, the same day that bandmates Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker slam DeLonge in a tell-all Rolling Stone interview. They claim the vocalist/guitarist will only communicate with them via email or through his manager, and his constant flakiness has kept them from recording new music. Barker adds: "It's hard to cover for someone who's disrespectful and ungrateful."

April 2, 2013 Just hours before a show in Calgary, Bon Jovi guitarist Richie Sambora leaves the group, citing personal reasons. Surprisingly, he doesn't re-join the band, although he does perform with them at their 2018 Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction. Sambora joined the band in 1983 and co-wrote most of their hits.

July 6, 2009 Guitarist Ryan Ross and bassist Jon Walker announce they are leaving Panic At The Disco. That leaves vocalist Brendon Urie and drummer Spencer Smith to continue the band.

April 24, 2008 Jane's Addiction reunite to rock the NME Awards.

April 5, 2008 Toto breaks up after performing its final concert in Seoul.

April 1, 2008 Scott Weiland officially departs Velvet Revolver, effectively ending the band.

March 26, 2008 Guitarist Clint Lowery returns to Sevendust to replace Sonny Mayo.

February 21, 2008 Paramore cancel a European tour because of "internal struggles." They take some time off, but resume operations a few months later.

January 10, 2008 Panic! At The Disco announce they will be dropping their "!" with the release of their next album, Pretty. Odd.

October 24, 2007 Backstreet Boys release Unbreakable, their first album without Kevin Richardson.More

August 15, 2007 The Osmonds reunite for the first time in over two decades to perform their 50th anniversary concert for PBS.

April 23, 2007 Bevan Davies replaces Will Hunt as drummer for Static-X.

April 17, 2007 Arcturus officially announces they are splitting up.
