Coat of Many Colors TV Movie

2015

The TV movie Dolly Parton's Coat of Many Colors airs on NBC.

Based on Parton's song, it is set in 1955 when Parton was 9 years old growing up in Locust Ridge, Tennessee. Jennifer Nettles and Ricky Schroder play Dolly's parents, and Parton herself narrates. The story picks up with Dolly's mother pregnant with child number nine, but when she loses the baby, the family's faith is tested. The movie follows in the wholesome tradition of Little House on the Prairie, where love, family and spirituality are paramount. It draws monster ratings, attracting 13 million viewers - the most for any recorded program since the 2009 series finale of ER. The famous coat is a key plot point. It was this coat, patched together by Parton's mom, that Dolly wore with pride, even though it marked her as being poor. The coat signified the love and resilience her family imparted on her - values that became the basis of many of her beloved songs. Parton held on to the coat, which got its own display in her Dollywood museum in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee.
